We hope that you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday! It's hard to believe that the year is passing so quickly, and the end-of-semester (and year-end!) crunch will be here before we know it. I'm so pleased to announce that the Bank of America Charitable Foundation's Student Leaders® Program is accepting applications for summer 2012. In recognition of your commitment to youth, we are asking for your help again to spread the word about this exciting leadership opportunity.
As part of our company's lending, investing and giving to strengthen the communities we serve, the Bank of America Student Leaders® Program has recognized more than 1,600 exemplary high school juniors and seniors with a passion for improving their communities. The program helps students gain a greater understanding of how nonprofits create impact in the community and develops them as the next generation of community leaders through two components:
A summer 2012 eight-week PAID summer internship at our nonprofit host site, Oasis Center, is designed to provide opportunities for the students to develop and apply leadership skills through hands-on work experience, while raising their awareness of community issues addressed by Oasis.
A week-long, all-expense paid Student Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C., July 15-20, 2012. Conducted in partnership with the Close Up Foundation, the Summit introduces students to aspects of civic, social and business leadership and provides them with knowledge and skills they will use throughout their life to create positive community change. **Participation in the Summit is a REQUIRED component of the internship.**
I have attached one of our Student Leader flyers for you to share with current high school juniors and seniors. The flyer provides general information about the program and will direct potential applicants to the Bank of America Charitable Foundation Web site for more information and the online application. Please note the application deadline of January 25th for the 2012 Student Leader Program, and all applications must be submitted through the online system.
In addition to the PDF version of the flyer, hard copies are available. Larger posters are also available to help advertise the program. If you would like either, please let me know. I'm also happy to come and meet with you or present information to groups of students, parents, educators, etc. Several past Student Leader interns are also available to share their experience with the program.
Please encourage interested students to apply by visiting www.bankofamerica.com/neistudentleaders and feel free to share this with others as well.
Last year we had an outstanding group of Student Leaders (listed below) who completed their internships at Oasis Center in Nashville. They worked full-time at Oasis for seven weeks serving with programs that included Summer of Ali/Rudolph, Your Story Continues, Halcyon Bike Workshop, and others. The students not only gained hands-on, real-world experience in programming/direct service, but also in the components of running a successful nonprofit (i.e. development, management, etc).
- Hui Cheng, of Nashville, is a senior at Martin Luther King Academic Magnet HS.
- Preston Crowder, of Nashville, is a senior at University School of Nashville.
- Mariel D'Andrea, of Franklin, is a recent graduate of David Lipscomb HS and a freshman at Birmingham Southern College
- Stephanie Kopel, of Nashville, is a recent graduate of MNPS Middle College HS and a freshman at Belmont University.
- Josh Wakefield, of Thompson's Station, is a senior at Independence HS.
As mentioned, once again in 2012, we plan to have all local students complete their seven-week internship at Oasis Center (http://www.oasiscenter.org/).
